‘Architecture, City and Spirituality’ is the theme of the exhibition hosted from 19 April 2024 to 18 June 2024 by the Yaoundé contemporary art gallery ABALIGALLERY and conceived by the artist Jean-MichelDissake Dissake.
Influenced from an early age by his architect father, who was well versed in the traditions of the Sawa culture, Jean-Michel Dissake Dissake found his artistic path through a picto-sculptural technique of cross-breeding art renamed Mudiki by linguist and man of culture Valère Epée.
In these times of profound and rapid changes, climate up heaval, so-called existential threats and the meteoric rise of AI, a revival of spirituality, due to experimentation with different practices aimed at reassuring, give to the theme of the exhibition its full relevance.
The artist takes us on a spiritual journey through an imaginary city, following in the footsteps of Ngengeti, a constellation of stars inspired by Dogon mythology, Matanda, the emblematic mangrove of the Wouri river and sanctuary of the 'mbéa toè' and 'jengu' of the Sawa people, Nanga Boko, drawing on the dreams of street children, and so on.
The works are a motley assemblage of salvaged materials, with computer components such as screens, chips and integrated circuits blending happily with bronze, aluminium, copper and vinyl. The main connections are highlighted with large metal spirals.
Before the end of the exhibition, the artist, who is currently at the Venice Biennale, will be on hand to share the quintessence of his artistic journey; we look forward to meeting him.
It's worth pointing out that ABALIGALLERY is the brainchild of ESSACA graduate architect Ahmad El Kadim Abali, to whom we offer our warmest congratulations.
