Vernacular in Angola

Angola (in Kikongo: Ngola) or Republic of Angola is a country in southern Africa sharing two borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo with which the country was part of the Kingdom of Kongo in the 15th century.

Its access to the Atlantic Ocean made it an important slave port during the slave trade and mainly towards Brazil, allowing the mutual cultural influences between the two countries to persist to this day, notably the building and the dances.

Village communities that have resisted the colonial system and preserved their organizations, ancestral traditions, cultural and ethnic identities are noted for their traditional habitat.

More generally, the influence of African vernacular building traditions on the types of structures built in certain rural areas, particularly “quilombos”, is clear.
